about

This is about a one-night-stand with a girl named Marie. I was serious but she wasn't, it turned out later.

lyrics

On the plane I concluded, while dozing and listening to Nick Cave, that I think that Marie seduced me. I began to think of all the things that she did. I began to remember things that I hadn't before. Things that still seem as if they were in a dream. Everything is pink now, in Paris, as in a dream. The sun is setting. The clouds are red. The stones of the Louvre, and the Ile de la Cite, are pink. Although, by the time I finish this sentence, the pink has faded, leaving dusk. One dream-like memory is the way she pushed my underwear down my legs, when we were in bed, with her foot. But there are several others. She said, "you like that corner?" because I was staring at the clock, and objects she had arranged around and near it. I don't remember those objects specifically. Some things in frames, and a candle-holder on the wall next to it, above it. She said she had a shoe fetish. What I wouldn't give to date a woman with a shoe fetish. She corrected my French pronunciation. I would also love to date a woman who did that. She showed me her self-portrait, from which she made cards. She showed me her card, and gave me one. She wanted me to like her. She wanted to show me her things. She wanted me to know about her. My fear is that anything I said or did could interfere with that, could change her mind about me. I would hate to see her for the first time and see distance in her eyes, a wall, an effort to steel herself against me. That first moment would say everything. If I don't have word from her before that. If I see her and there is a welcoming smile on her face then I will be happy. I want to be welcome into her life, into her room, into her arms. I want her to show me things and I want to know her. Could I have hurt her? That's what I was afraid of. That I had betrayed her trust. That she thought I had made up the story about wanting to work with her, just to get her into bed. Or even just that she had trusted me in her apartment, and I had taken advantage of that trust.
